I have read many mountaineering books and I have to say The Nepali Flat was my favorite. Most of the books are about people who climb for a living and even my favorite blogger Mark Horell isn't quite as descriptive as Gordon Alexander. I felt as if I was travelling beside him and experiencing everything along with him and Subash and Nima. Most climbing books gloss over the everyday trials & tribulations of travelling across a poor country at high altitude. They may mention something happened at Kathmandu or Lukla was scary but they don't offer a glimpse into everyday existence apart from the mountain peaks. Even Mark Horrell who started out as an down to earth trekker has been so many places and climbed so many peaks that while he is very descriptive of views he has begun glossing over everyday experiences. Gordon viewed everything as the experience of a lifetime so he never let difficulties take the joy out of what he was seeing. His relationship with Subash is endearing and it made me want to go to Nepal and hire him as my guide. Will definitely read this again.
This amazing book should be on everyone's must read list. The author has given us a hilarious, candid and seriously detailed account of his trek in the Nepal Himalaya. Having walked these paths myself, I could totally relate to his experiences, from the agony of realising there is yet another uphill climb, the absolute exhaustion of long, tiring days and relatively sleepless nights, the inevitable digestive tract issues, the struggle just to get from A to B, and to the awe-inspiring views and cultural insights that make the huge effort so worthwhile. I knew every village he mentioned, commiserated with every bad meal he ate, and cheered with him when he made it over those passes. Even though the last time I trekked in Nepal was over 20 years ago, he took me right back there and I walked the hills again with him.Together with this guide, Subash, and porter, Nima, 'Mr Alex' shows incredible fortitude, strength of character, and ultimately, appreciation for the culture of this beautiful country and its people. Before reading this book, I wondered why it might be called The Nepali Flat. I don't plan to spoil that by giving you an answer. Suffice to say it is indeed typical of the local attitude.Anyone who has walked these paths will laugh out loud at the shared memories the author will bring back. Anyone who is planning such a trip would do well to take notes. And those who just like to read about the journeys of others who put themselves out in the world to breathe it in will not be disappointed.I could not put this book down and did not want it to end. I feel like I have journeyed along with a new friend on the high Himalayan footpaths. Do yourself a favour and go get it!
I've never read a trekking book before. I've read tons of mountaineering books, but this was the first trekking one. In fact, I've run out of new mountaineering books, but still am fascinated with Nepal and the Himalayas, which is why I bought, "Nepali Flat". I am glad that I did. Gordon is a great writer. He is honest, blunt, and humorous, even at his own expense. He gave me a great feel for what it would be like to come from sea level, slightly out of shape, and take a trek. Which is my personal dream to one day do, as I definitely will never be fit enough or acclimatized enough to climb Everest. Because of this, I found the book interesting, and funny at times, and I appreciated Gordon's blunt honesty. He apologizes for mentioning bodily functions too much, but hey, those are important things to know! I, for one, would bring this book on a trek and refer to it for food references, and "dunny" warnings. Also, he wrote in such a way as to make the reader grow as fond of his guide and porter as he obviously was. Good read!
I've been in a bit of a slump lately, looking for a book to draw me in. Of course there are hundreds, but this one hooked me. I was up for an adventure. I love my hikes, but do not foresee trekking in Nepal in my future. I really enjoyed my armchair travels reading Gordon's book while commuting to and from work.It was fun to experience the journey vicariously through Gordon's experience. His descriptions of places, food and people - especially with Subash and Nima, kept me interested, as well as the highs and lows he experienced along the way. I found myself Googling images of the towns through which he passed, the hotels in which he stayed, and the peaks he saw on his travels. His book did what a fun adventure book should do - take you on a mental journey to different places, and have you feeling satisfied when you arrive home.
