I cannot say enough great things about this book. I own all of his books and this one is by far my favorite. The information he presents to the reader is easy to digest and it challenges what you thought you understood about the Old Testament and its relation to the New Testament. I had no idea prior to reading this book that Isaac was not a young boy forced to give himself as a sacrifice, but an adult, who freely did his fathers bidding. That in revelation in itself made this book worth the purchase. Pastor Gallaty's vivid descriptions of traditional Jewish practices that get lost many times in the discussions in Evangelical discussions were very beneficial in allowing me to view things I read from a new perspective.Each chapter of this book uncovered more information on tradition and ceremonial aspects of Jewish culture than I had ever viewed prior to this. These explanations bring so much of the Scriptures into a whole new light for me. It also made me understand Jesus better and the development of his ministry. Descriptions of cultural reasons things occurred in the timeline in which they did were enlightening.Perhaps my favorite part of the book was the description of the woman in John 8 and the discussion of why her healing was truly such a big deal. Had I not had a cultural context in which to associate it to, it would not hold the meaning it does now that I have read this book. Chapter 8 was a blessing during this week of Easter as well. "A Colt-Riding, Table-Turning, Tree-Cursing Messiah". Read it first if you buy it before Easter.This book was wonderful. The illustrations, the history and tradition, the backing of scriptural comparisons, all formed to make a surprisingly easy read. I feel that reading this has made me a better believer, a better small group leader, and a better disciple of Christ.I highly encourage it. I look forward to buying whatever he puts out next!
Don’t hesitate to grab this book! There are several reasons why, but here are my top two…1.Something Old Is Something New – Robby states: “one out of every twenty-two verses in the New Testament contains quotations from the Old Testament.†Knowing this reality the 21st century church must admit we are guilty of thinking of the New Testament as inferior to the Old Testament, assuming that 1st century Jewish culture is similar to our own, etc. Robby helps us by running back to the “Jewishness of our faith†by getting a hold off this truth: Something old is something new. You can't separate the Old Testament from the New Testament. Robby's hope for this book is stated well in his own words: “By placing Jesus back into the context from which he came, we are able to see more clearly the miracles he performed, the lessons he taught, and the mission he fulfilled.†Robby has accomplished this vision quite well. Many stories from the Gospels that I have known for years came alive in fresh, challenging, and transforming ways after reading The Forgotten Jesus.2. Information To Imitation – We have bought into the fallacy that we can grow by the introduction of new information alone according to Gallaty. Robby notes that Jews devoted time to studying God in order to imitate him. This should be the end goal in mind when we read the Bible. Gallaty provides an excellent case for why we read Scripture, and what spiritual growth looks like: “The more you know Him, the more you love Him. The more you love Him, the more you obey Him. The more you obey Him, the more He manifests Himself to you.†So true! By the end of Gallaty's book my hunger to read God's word and be obedient to Him increased immensely.Eric GeorgeDiscipleship Pastor
Robby Gallaty has impressed me again. I have very much enjoyed this book. It has made me think and question. I appreciate his deep research and desire to teach us, so we can try to understand where Jesus came from. As a person who loves learning about history I found this book full of wonderful facts I was never taught growing up in Church. I love how he brings us back to the Old Testament over and over. I highly recommend this book and I will be giving it out as gifts to friends and family.
A must read! Robby has done a great job in looking at the Jewishness of Jesus. He does a good job in showing how the Old Testament and Jewish culture can shed light on the New Testament. The Jewish "use of both hands" in talking about Scripture is what we need to understand in our American Christianity. I highly recommend this book.
very little in this book that I didn't agree with. It is a wonderful book that will make you grow in your love for our King Jesus. He brings you back into the culture and gives Jewish perspectives on WHY the events are in the Gospels. He does a wonderful job of giving Jewish perspective without being a "Jewish culture" worshiper. Once I started this book I finished it. I certainly don't finish all books that I start :)
I am thankful to Robby Gallaty for writing this book to give its readers a proper understanding of the "Jewishness of Jesus". In doing so, it has allowed me to better understand intended messages rather than misunderstanding because of my Western perspective. My goal is to learn Biblical truth. While I am blessed to have the Holy Spirit as my helper in understanding Scripture, this is a valuable addition in my quest for truth through a proper understanding. I liked this book so much, I bought a second copy as a gift for a Christian colleague who holds a teaching role within the Church. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a more accurate understanding of Scripture.
Outstanding. Robby Gallaty does it again. He thoroughly walk through Jesus' life and cultural context, yet explains it in an accessible way. Christians will be informed and inspired to live like Jesus and be a disciple that makes disciples.
