Well written chapters on understanding dry shade and coping with dry shade. Extensive plant recommendations, but mostly limited to zones 3-6. Very few recommendations for zones 7-8.
I like it but it is from England, and most of the choices don't work for Colorado
Initial response is positive because it includes zoning for plants. Being a Zone 3 gardener limits our choices considerably but this author addresses that issue. He also understands and explains tree canopies, northern latitude shade challenges and benefits - the underlying challenges of gardening under trees and next to buildings and shade structures. I think this will be a big help when I garden and when I do gardening presentations so will probably recommend the book to others.
Great book for those dealing with dry shade. I bought another copy for my Mom.
Good photos and plant descriptions. Other than that, its pretty worthless. I bought this because I own some heavily wooded property that is very dry, at times. I was hoping for guidance in planting the understory. This is not the aim of this book. Essentially, the advice of the book is to irrigate your garden. Not at all reflective of the book's title.

Dry shade is one of the toughest planting challenges. This book gives you some unusual ideas for plants to use in this area. I was concerned about the zones, as I have seen some of the plants outside the zones mentioned, but that may be due to our climate changing. The pictures are lovely give you a really good feeling as to what the plants will look like in your yard.
Lots of great ideas for this type of garden. Wonderful pictures and good advice.
