Once again, it is the people Charles meets along the Route that makes this the inspiring novel that it is. Epiphany pulling pigweed, sweat equity. Walking the first part of the Route 66 is like a forced Pilgrimage, a punishment because of perceived wrongs in a life of extremes. The awakening begins when he is stripped of everything of value (with the exception of a ring around his neck.) The journey of gratitude begins, on the road to peace and the serenity that has been missing from his life, from the time of his abusive childhood to his abuse of those who trusted him. The first part of this novel is like a travelogue, it is as if you are walking along with Charles. A highlight for me was when he checked into the Hyatt Regency in St. Louis and ate at Ruth's Chris Steak House. I have been there and done that. I could picture Charles there, I was with him on that part of the journey. Sometimes the story is on the boring side as the journey itself must have been. It is the people along the way that brings this story to life. Just like Alan's walk to Key West. It was the people he met on the walk that made the story. The people become real and the metamorphosis is complete by the time the destination is reached. Key West or Santa Monica, the ending is the journey to self. I, for one, know how I want the story to end on the "road home" and Spring 2019 cannot come soon enough. At least in this series there are only three novels and not five as in "The Walk". Thank you Richard for once again bringing a tear to my eye and a recognition of what makes life so blessed.

The totally couldn't wait for this book to come out. I even pre-ordered it which I very seldom do. At the beginning of the book there was enough about Book 1 that my memory was refreshed and I wasn't lost as I got into Book 2. At the beginning, when Charles was deciding what to do since he was "dead" from the plane crash that he missed getting onto, I kept thinking you need to tell someone. What about your money and the people that worked for you. He went to his own memorial and was surprised at the amount of people that showed up. But the memorial is what decided him to walk the Route 66 all the way to California. I enjoyed hearing about Charles's adventure's, the places he passed on the road. He worked as a migrant worker for awhile, which changed a great deal about the way he was thinking about people and life. As I got to the end of the book, I could tell it wouldn't end with book 2. I was so eager to see how he meets up with his ex-wife and little boy. Well, I guess I will just anticipate the next book on the Forgotten Rd.

Of all the authors I read (and I read hundreds in different genres), Richard Paul Evans is among my top five all time favorites. His books are so original with characters so intriguing, I sometimes have a hard time putting one of his books down. I have an extremely busy schedule, but I always manage to read a few pages: during my daily hour-long bubble bath, standing in line at the bank, grocery store check-out lines, during commercials on TV, and just about every other place where I had time to spare. One thing I can say aboutthis series is that I enjoyed it so much, I read it as slowly as possible so I could savor each sentence. Each year I look forward to his new books and so far he has never disappointed me. I am a fan for life! I have his books on a separate shelf in my massive personal library. I've read a few several times each and never get bored or tired of reading the same stories more than once. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I loved The Walk series, read them all in two weeks. Then waited a year for the last book. After some time the Broken Road was the newest and I loved it, but this second book really disappointed me. You wait a year to read whats's next and the next book is full of fluff. What happened Richard? The only addition to the story are the last chapters. Don't think will buy the next one...

Richard Paul Evans is an inspired writer. He was concerned about writing another Walking story...but this one is on redemption and he proved he can write equals just as interesting and inspired as The Walk Series! The only thing bad about this story is that I have to wait until next spring to purchase the final book in this trilogy! The first book he wants you to be annoyed and upset with the main character so that we can feel redemption in your own hearts as you see his changing for the better! Nailed it! And the bonus is you learn history about Route 66 that you might know otherwise! Richard tells us that he usually doesn't know when he starts writing a book series as this, just how it is going to end. But as he writes, thoughts of how it is to end comes to him and always, you are lifted up and your heart rejoices for the characters in his beautiful stories! I encourage anyone who struggles with the need to repent or even forgive another or themself, you need to read these three books...number3 will be out by next May! I can never go wrong buying one of Richard Paul Evans' books and neither could you!

I really wanted to LOVE this book. The Walk series was GREAT...5 stars! The first book in this series was really enjoyable. Then a few chapters into the second book it literally turned into The Walk series. The exact same format just a different road! Disappointed as I was not looking for a replica.

As I have written before and probably will again, I am a fan. So far I have read every book that RPE has written. For some inexplicable reason he is not sold here. But lots of authors (that I don't care about) are not sold here. Till 2012 (when I reopened my sleeping Amazon account) I would buy them (hardbacks mostly) online but since 2012, I buy ebooks and although we do not come from similar backgrounds at all, I DO enjoy the Christmas books. This series has me waiting eagerly for the next chapter. I read the previous chapter and 3 days later this book (preordered) popped into the Kindle and I continued the story. I am really waiting for chapter 3. I like the characters that he meets on the road. I am enjoying his adventures.I read The Walk. All of them. My favorite of all the books is The Sunflower.
