I began flying tail draggers well into my twenty plus years as an airline pilot, only to find that I was learning to fly all over again. The Husky A1B my then wife and I purchased carried me coast to coast twice, traveling that same southern route, just as Kern and Rinker had done as kids. Although my trip happened decades later, I discovered remnants of old time aviation still existed in middle America in towns like Anthony, Kansas, where I too happened upon an old Stearman man one evening during dinner at the local diner after a fuel stop. Mr. Bucks book will inspire you to dust off your logbook, get recurrent, and go fly somewhere just for the sake of doing it. Even as a professional pilot, his story makes me yearn for a trip in an airplane with no radios, dancing from one little grass field to the next without a care in the world. It will make you spontaneously laugh out loud while sitting in a public place, such as the middle section of coach while deadheading to another flight assignment, and also cause you to reflect on your own relationships that often times are strained with the challenges of being human. From start to finish Flight of Passage is a heart warming story of inspiration and struggle that ultimately lead to the healing and growth of relationship. Mr. Buck is a master story teller and writer.
The eponymously titled Flight of Passage is a warm, funny account of two brothers and their record setting flight across the country in a 1938 Piper Cub in post JFK America. At the core of this story are the conflicts between two brothers and their complicated relationship with their former barnstorming father. Fifteen year old Rinker Buck is the first person narrator and navigator. Seventeen year old Kernahan Buck is the pilot. Rink is the outgoing, self-confident high school jock and all around mischief maker. Kern is the color-between-lines, geek who only excels in the air…an aviation prodigy.Kern’s dream is to buy and restore a Piper Cub and fly it from NJ to Los Angeles. Rink is reluctantly enlisted to go along. Kern’s motivation is part adventure and part an attempt to validate himself to his loving, but overbearing father. The story is primarily about the rapprochement first between the two brothers and secondly between the brothers and their father. The flight itself is the literary vehicle that moves the story along. A Piper Cub with an eighty-five horsepower engine, fabric covered wings and no electrical system, and therefore no radio, is an unlikely choice for a transcontinental flight. A Cub’s ceiling of around ten thousand feet is well below the Rocky Mountain peaks they have to traverse. As a result they must fly the turbulence filled Guadalupe Pass just east of El Paso. The account of that passage is harrowing. Along the way they stop at several backwater airfields and meet an array of colorful characters. (In that respect, not that much has changed over the years.)This book will appeal to anyone who enjoys family dynamic themes and/or aviation. The author, who portrays himself as a cynic, has managed to craft a sweet, entertaining story that is a pleasure to read.
Essential reading for moms of teenage boys on a long rope, this is the most remarkable coming of age story told through the adventure of a lifetime -- flying across the country alone in a way-too-small plane, with no radio and no real plan. Vivid pictures of gorgeous country, funny small towns, old fashioned news reporting, and facing the music. For fliers, youll love the sense of hrad won flight skills from a time when you really held the wheel and the throttle. Its also very much about the dynamic between two very different brothers, each with their own unique axe to grind on the way to adulthood. I loved this and recommend it very highly , and i dont even like small planes!
I recently finished Rinker Buck's memoir of traveling on the Oregon Trail by mule wagon, and it was inevitable that I want to read about his other amazing exploit. In 1966 when he was 15 and his older brother was 17, they took a restored Piper Cub across the U.S. and back again. The two stories are like book ends and together give a complete picture of Tom Buck, patriarch of the Buck clan and a complex fascinating man. This is also a story of a young man's journey of self-discovery as well as a record of a time in our country's history when life could still be lived without too much bureaucratic control. I thoroughly enjoyed going along for the ride.
