If you are looking to learn HOW to actually use Tableau this is not the book for you. The book is useful for giving the reader an overview of what Tableau is capable of doing (broadly speaking). This is definitely not a hands-on how-to training guide for people who would like step-by-step examples, lessons or exercises to follow and learn from.I'm shocked to see people professing how great this book is for begineers and experts. If you are consultant, perhaps this helps you to learn, and communicate to others, WHAT the tool can do. Unfortunately, I was hoping to learn at least the basics of how to USE Tableau (with at least some lessons that include step-by-step details).
Background: I have a degree in Engineering and an MBA. I've worked in IT for nearly 2 decades, working with SQL-based systems: CRM, Sales Automation, Campaign Management, Data Warehousing, Data Mining, Reporting, etc....That said, this is my first foray into the Tableau universe. This was by far the most recommended book, and having read many books under the Wiley imprint, I did not hesitate to purchase it.The Good: It is extremely detailed, with full-color illustrations. Plenty of coverage of just about every single feature imaginable. It also has references to other publications at the end of each chapter.The Bad: Not a single step-by-step example provided. Chapter 3: "Building Your First Visualization" is a horribly misleading title, as it does not discuss how to build a visualization from the beginning (wouldn't that be how to build "Your First Visualization"???). All of the feature explanations are made using examples of charts that have ALREADY been built. Bizarre title, for sure. The Use Cases are pathetic - more like a high-level sales brochure of how Tableau was used to address some real-world questions.ConclusionIf you have a wealth of experience in Tableau, and need a reference to help you with the specifics of features, then I would highly recommend this.If you are looking to learn Tableau from the ground up, this manual is absolutely the wrong choice. There are NO working examples and NO links to data that would provide a way to recreate the feature illustrations. Extremely frustrating - It should be titled, "Tableau! A Dictionary of Features! This is Not for Learning!"
I am 16% through the Kindle version of this book, and so far it has been a major disappointment. The last straw was in chapter two, where you spend all this time formatting the data, then simply "test your work by building a map". On the next page, "if you are unable to create the map, don't worry" because I'll learn how to do that in chapters 3 and 5. Kind of defeats the purpose of testing my work, huh?
I had to use this for a class and only had to read the first 8 chapters.This book is okay. It tells you what tableau can do and all of its features but does not do a very good job giving direction on how to do it. For a brief overview of Tableau software this is a great book. But if you are looking to make advanced data visualizations and need detailed instructions on how, this is not the book for you.
This book, written for version 8 was probably a 4 Star book for that version but it loses a star today because of some of the differences in the application that aren't clear from a relative newcomers perspective. So as of today I would recommend this book for a newcomer as the function reference is really handy as you gain experience but there are other books available that are for version 9 that would be more relevant.Im also dinging it a star because it suffers from somewhat of an identity crisis - in some sections it is a step-by-step guide and in others it assumes you are working directly from the source files provided on the book web site. This type of back and forth tends to be a little confusing because I'm not sure if the author is asking me to follow along or just giving some broad strokes how to accomplish something pointing to a completed file. Which is another minor nuisance, the files are not available in tableau public so in order to use the files I have to either log in to my work machine or attempt to re-create the workbook.If it were updated for 9.1 to include building some Data Connectors and made to work in public I would purchase again as it is as good or better than any of the other tableau books I have read. If there are any publishers or authors out there here is my casting call for anyone SOMEONE please write a book for tableau from a developers perspective.
This is a good book for someone trying to get a handle on Tableau, with regards to your own, personal company data. Granted there are "how to's" in it, but it is really suited for the types of charts you might use or need within your company for data. Its a great book. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the writing is super small and very hard to read.
I think this book is a good introduction to Tableau, especially if you are able to follow along with the Tableau workbooks that are available on the companion website. I didn't give the book 5 stars because the book references excel files that are available to download on the companion website; however, I haven't been able to find any of the excel files to download. A few times I have been able to get around this by saving the data source file from Tableau if there happens to be a tableau workbook for that chapter that is using the excel file as the data source, but there are many cases where this is not an option. A little disappointing as it makes it a lot harder to follow along with some of the examples and made some of the chapters confusing where I spent time re-reading and looking for the excel files. I contacted Wiley support (the publisher) about this too; hopefully they will respond.
Not finding the book very helpful. Lacks navigation steps and simple examples that would help the reader learn by doing.For a book on visualization software I found it wordy, redundant and far to general to be useful.
