I am an avid reader of all books concerning emergency medicine and other related topics. I have read countless ER books and I can say without reservation this one is the best hands down! So good in fact that this is he first time I have taken the time to write a review about medical related books. From writing style, patient stories, to life lessons, this book grabs ahold of you and you can't put it down! I found myself anxious, frustrated and happy at the stories and lesson the author shared! I wish he was my doctor! He totally changed my view concerning frivolous lawsuits and how devastating they are to the doctors involved.I never agreed with those type of suits, but after reading this book it opened my eyes to the evil of "unchecked" law suits. Now I am hoping the author has another book in the works!! I'm very sad that I've finished the book.... I long for just " one more of his stories"!
I did enjoy this book because it truly gave the reader not only insight as to what goes on in the ER but what it takes to become an ER doctor as well. The long grueling hours, the back stabbers, the individuals who suffer and die as well as the ones who have miraculous recoveries. It is often funny, and gut wrenching, like the malpractice suit experienced by Dr. Russell's friend Noah; we are literally on the edge of our seats wondering what the outcome wold be.My only complaint about this book is that it appears to be a bit disjointed in parts. Reading about the author's growth as a physician was most insightful; however, some of the personal experiences lead one to believe when and where and with whom did some of these events happen. However, the author does say as a disclaimer that possibly some of these events may not have been remembered exactly as they occurred. All in all, worth reading.
This book told a lot about the life of Brent Rock Russell, the author, as well as descriptions of real ER patients and their cases. We usually don't know what kind of a childhood our doctors had, or what they did as teenagers. The ER cases cover the full range of emergencies from an unexplained, sudden high fever to the usual broken bones and injuries the human body is subject to. The ER crew must make many life or death decisions in a very short time. Then there are the hospital politics and financial interests to be managed. In between, the doctors are falling in love, getting married, having babies and struggling financially on a resident's salary. It's easy to forget your ER doctor actually has a real life outside of their work. Then there are the mentally unstable patients who can be a physical danger to the docs. This book pulled me in from the first paragraph. I enjoyed it so much I went to the author's website where I found a second "bonus" book continuing the stories. Oh yah, I almost forgot, this book is also extremely funny in a few spots. It has everything! Haven't read the second book yet, but it's on my short list.
Miracles and Mayhem had my attention from the very beginning and kept me hooked; it took a very short amount of time to tear through this book. It is written in a very engaging and accessible style, giving insight into the craziness physicians have to contend with.I was sad to read how many people in the medical profession have distain for those of a religious bent, but it was good to read there are at least *some* out there who are nonjudgmental. The story of Noah being sued was instructional. I felt so bad for him. I wonder what happened to Franklin in the end? Did he learn from what happened? I hope so. I felt a great deal of respect for Noah and the way he handled the outcome.I learned a great deal about emergency physicians and the things they have to endure. I would like to find one about nurses...I bet they have even more crazy stories to tell.
I have read many, many medical books similar to this one, but I have rated this one as 5 stars. I am also a medical professional and I found it difficult to find fault with any of Brent's writing. The time of his residency as well as his time in the ER after graduation rings true. He supplied just enough medical information to make it interesting and even fascinating at times. The only characters I doubted was where the one was pulled out of the bathtub after being shot and bitten by a snake with his buddies as his accessories. The book is well written throughout. Not only is he a successful ER doctor, but author as well.
This book is filled with engaging, calamitous, amusing and sometimes unbelievable stories of the author's experience as an emergency room doctor. And while the stories keep you fascinated, the author also does a beautiful job of interweaving his life and his role as husband and friend throughout. I thought a lot about how the book was written once I finished it and was impressed at how he came to write the book in the way that he did. It's a smooth-flowing account and feels seamless in its progression. But the author had to have done quite a bit of work in making it seem that way. It's beautifully constructed and that makes it a true pleasure to read.I also felt that I got to know the author as a person, and a doctor, and he comes across as the sort of person you hope would be able to treat you if you ever needed to go to the ER. He's kind, compassionate, light-hearted and good at his job. He's also authentic in his depiction of himself and his profession. I'm grateful he took the time to write the book and hope he continues to write more.
This is the BEST book I have read in a very long time and I read a lot. I didn't want it to end. Seeing what doctors go thru has given me a whole new outlook. It was filled with important information. Some of the doctors had such good moral character, I actually found myself doing my own moral evaluation. It's a wonderful book on so so many levels. Well written making it very entertaining I am so glad I chose this book. I promise you will not regret reading this wonderful book Thank you to all the Doctors in this book (except Traitor) Ha Ha
