This is a memoir that certainly reads like a novel. I agree with the other reviews that say one gets the feeling of knowing the author personally. I could see the vistas and feel the warmth of the lodges and fur blankets when he spoke of their life. How achingly sad it is most of the beautiful land he speaks of is now "developed." I'm grateful to Mr. Schultz for chronicling life with his Blackfoot wife and their friends. I have ordered all his books and even went so far as to buy an original painting of an Indian horse by his son.
If you want to read wonderful stories about extinct native Americans, Schultz is your author. In this book he describes how life was when he lived with the Blackfeet tribe on the High Plains. This book is a treasure to read. I am on a tear reading through all of his very wonderful books. These stories are beautiful and precious...a way of life alive for 100,000 years until the Europeans came and caused them to become extinct.
Reading this book was great but I'm hurting from atrocities the the white man could dish out to the natives of this great country, some way our history chose not to tell the truth. Enjoy
The author shares his stories of living with the Blackfeet tribe at a prime point in history. The buffalo are still in abundance, the railroad has not yet come to the area, and the homesteaders have not yet begun their westward invasion.Hunting, horse racing, horse stealing, raiding parties, romance and tragedy.A book where reality is more fascinating than fiction!!
Excellent read! I started reading and was not able to stop until I finished it. It was written like a document recorded daily. It made for very interesting reading; a vivid read.
Very enjoyable first hand account of a white man from New England's experience among American Indians in the 1870s and their interaction with White traders. Excellent insights into the family life and day to day activities of the Indians and the changes in their lives as Whites spread westward into Montana.
I give this book five stars because it was told from the heart. The author lived in a period of the west that brought rapid change to the lives of the native peoples. It was great to read of his adventures with his Indian friends and his wonderful marriage to his Blackfoot wife. Although they suffered hardships, for the most part they enjoyed an idyllic life in the Rocky Mountain West.
