The author covers the societal impact of rock and roll, and at times goes beyond a simple recitation of artists' names and hit records to show how the music was disseminated to the public through TV shows like American Bandstand, and Top 40 radio. The text is not compelling; it reads like a synthesis of the author's research material rather than a product of original thinking or scholarship-it is a history without a point of view. Many of the quotes included in the sidebars are taken from secondary-source material, which makes this book seem as though it's even one step further removed from the facts.
